Nyao!
Well, a month has come and gone in my life, a weird strange lonely fun crazy month. Japan never felt far removed from my previous thoughts of the place. It felt, honestly, like home. I didn't even feel like a tourist there. Wow, it was like so much and yet not enough happened over there. I do know now that I don't think I'll ever travel alone again- I'm surrounded by wonderful people here and only another once in a lifetime chance will make me leave this comfort behind.

Clicky for observations and blurry pics :3 )If anyone'd like to see my album, its at photobucket under lunapchan: http://s238.photobucket.com/albums/ff289/lunapchan/Trip%20to%20Japan%20Aug-Oct%202007/August/
Tada! Complete with commentary by yours truly.

I'll be back.
Eventually.
Honto ni desho!

Long flight, long naps

  • Sep. 3rd, 2007 at 11:43 AM

Whoa long flight is LONG. Thankfully I left NYC in the morning, since I ended up working the night before. No sleep for the weak! It was a orderly if not surreal feeling to stay up all night to pack and say goodbye to the comfort of my home, family, friends, and job. As a sign to leave it all behind, I saw people I haven't seen in years randomly drop by "Sarabeth's Resturant" [makers of the BEST jams ], my bottle of wine broke on the train, soaking my uniform and apron a permanent purple mess. I also had my trusty pink wine key confiscated by airport security [who raised an eyebrow at my pink Hello kitty sneakers. "Japan is the land of cute- gotta dress appropriately."].

The flight was one of the comfortablest i'd ever had the pleasure of being on- American Airlines treats you right ^_^. From hot towels to dinner, snacks, drinks, lunch and tv/radio, i didn't want to leave. Using self check in I changed my seat to a window 2-seater. Though I realized half way there that the arm rest was movable, i still stretched out and slept like a baby. Man I still think about that flight...

Arrival was a-ok, since the airport is convinatly bilingual in everything. True to Zak's word, there was a warning that the walkway is about to end, please watch your step. Of course, by the time it takes to say all that you're already far away. One of the many very uselessly helpful Japanese manners. The exchange rates were awful, but thankfully they had the Citibank 'cash box' atm thing that sensed your prensence and blared "irrasimase!". Never was i happier to have stuck with citibank than right there and then. Cash in hand, I set about to look for the trains. There was the JR, toei, express, limited, tobu, and a million more. And not to mention lines at automatic ticket booths everywhere. I asked a lady who asked another who asked another and they finally turned and took my money, ran, came back with a Suica, told me to hurry and led me to my luggage. Which they tied my shopping bags to and exclaimed not to be careless [i think. Engrish, not so good]. Without giving me a chance to explain I wanted to explore the 3 ladys all glared and motioned to go. Didnt want to offend so I left and ended up at a desolate area w/2 bemused guards. No English; they just pointed. This place was huge but weirdly empty, so it felt like exploring a new advanced territory by myself. Which quickly disappered as I rounded the corner and almost knocked over a lady. Apologizing and bowing I found a seat, plopped down and took out my guide book. Which wasn't there. WHICH WASNT THERE. OMG.

I sat quietly realizing that I was now officially lost. I would have gone back but my luggage was unbearably heavy and the place was far. Fine, I'll just stick this out until I reach a book store. That book was just begging to be left behind, seeing how a bottle of wine broke all over it <_<;; Managed to talk to a lady who was very helpful and talking about her job & her vactions in random Japanese and English. We parted ways after her wishing me a Happy Bday, and I went on my merry way. It was a long train ride and I passed lots of beautiful greenery around the airport, then little houses, squished houses, and finally the big buildings. Bought some onigiri [yay! 1st purchase!], and Apple soda. Everything was in Japanese so I just grabbed a random one that looked familiar. Fish eggs. Yum. I Finally arrived at my new home for the next 2 days: Asakusa. [PS: this was written on August 28, but with no internet I couldn't post it. I have to copy from my journal so bear with me kudasai. Now I'm off to Ikekuburo :D] Lessons learned: -Airport's selfcheck in is a Godsend. -Trains have cushions! Score one for my tired butt. -The signs are electronic and bilingual. No need to fear :) -Trasportation is expensive. You pay as you go in [Suica is like a prepaid Metrocard], then have`to pay as you go out. They charge you by how far you've gone in their system ;-; And there's no free transfers to ANY trains. -You have to ask for help or no one will help you around here. They really do keep to themselves on the train.

New start, new day

Hey there people. Whoever you are. Spambots.
I'm going to be using this journal to keep track of all the $%#% things and fun incredible things that happen and are happing to me these days.

Who am I?
One of the luckiest person alive :D I'm currently living in Japan with no contacts, no lanugage, and no idea what to do. Genki Shock has most generously and kindly provided me with a FREEEEEEE ticket to Japan. As all sane people are wont to do, i left my job, my family and school to come here. Thank you Zak, maker of all that is good and holy.

What is Genki shock?
If you like Japan, jrock, jpop, and quite frankly having fun, then you need to check it out. Like now. Before you forget. GO!!
The largest Japanese newspaper in America regularly runs promos for us and Benten label is one of our favorites.
Zak hooks up members with events happening around NYC involving all types of indie rock and Japan-related events. He knows just about everybody you need to know in J-music. Yay Indie power!!

Where am I staying?
Currently in Nerima, Tokyo, Japan. I'm renting a guest house room from Sakura House for 72,000 yen. Which i hear is okay, its cheaper than NYC rent. Seriously. My place's tiny but cozy, so I'm happy with it. Feel free to contact me if you want a buddy get lost with. What they say about Japanese transporation is true x100%. On time, winding, far reaching, huge maze stations, and EXPENSIVE.

A little recap of the person that is Luna P:
I'm a 23 year old gal who cant get used to being called woman, who's always up for adventure even if it means getting lost and walking 5 hours in heels. I've been to Mexico and Puerto Rico, and can now add Japan to my repertoire. I have a Norweigen forest cat who i miss dearly. I'm a middle child so don't mind my eccentricities. Agnostic, quiet, sometimes nonstop chatty, the fastest talker you know and a Japanese music [Woo! Buck tick! Maximum the hormone! Enka!], Japanese culture, character good, shopping, anime, cosplay, fashion-dabble, farfetched action movie, candy-loving fan. And manga fanatic. Sometimes drawing fan.
